Chapter FIFTEEN

JORMON’S BLAST HIT THE BOX, AND WHATEVER WAS IN IT blasted back. The explosion carried his body in a rush of water and before I knew it, I was swept away, too.

I kicked my fins trying to reorient myself, but they were gone, replaced by legs and feet too untrained to swim against the raging water. In that moment, I realized I needed air. Nothing was stored in my lungs. Moments ago, I didn’t need to breathe, now my breath was all I could think about.

Panic set in. I was spinning out of control and didn’t know which way was up. I was going to die if I didn’t do something. Jesus, keep me near the cross.

I needed a sahdr that could give me orientation or breath, or both. I couldn’t think of one. I couldn’t think of anything except finding my way out. And of Jormon. Jormon!

My chest was being squeezed by the weight of the water, and my head felt like it was about to explode. It would explode. Damn, my head was about to explode. Where was Jormon? Where was the surface? I needed air. I needed…

I picked a direction and swam, swam until my arms burned with exhaustion. I wouldn’t make it. Sorry, Jormon. Sorry, Momma and Daddy. Sorry, Novi, my dear sister. I should’ve left y’all a note telling y’all where I was fixing to go. You shouldn’t have to find out this way, if you found out at all.

My body jerked as I took in water. As my eyes closed, I saw a vision of Jesus, coming straight at me in a gurgling whirl. Thank you, Lord.
